Window Reglazing & Glass Repair
Broken panes, fogged units and failed putty fixed by glaziers — the repair-first service Bobbitt has offered Houston since 1938.
Before replacement windows existed, there was reglazing — and for a huge number of Houston's older homes it is still the right answer. When the putty that seals a pane cracks and falls away, the window rattles, leaks air and lets water in. The sash itself is usually sound. Reglazing strips the failed material, reseats or replaces the glass, and seals the pane the way it was done when the house was built — for a fraction of the cost of a replacement window, and without throwing away original woodwork.
Bobbitt Glass and Mirror Company has done this work since 1938. We assess windows first (it is a service in its own right on our Google listing), and we will tell you honestly when a window is beyond saving. But when it can be reglazed or re-glassed, we will not sell you a new window instead — that honesty is exactly how a glass shop survives nine decades.
What You Get with Our Window Reglazing & Glass Repair
Old-window specialists
Wood and steel sashes from every era of Houston housing, reglazed the traditional way — points, compound, patience.
Broken pane replacement
Single panes measured, cut and set — often the fastest, cheapest fix in all of glass work.
Fogged unit replacement
Failed insulated glass units swapped in your existing frame. Clear glass again, without buying a window.
Honest assessment first
Assessment of windows is a listed Bobbitt service: we look, we tell you the truth, then we quote.
Safety glass upgrades
Tempered and laminated glass fitted where code and common sense require it — doors, sidelites, bathrooms.
Putty & seal renewal
Failed glazing compound and perimeter seals renewed to stop drafts, rattles and water getting in.
Options & Materials
Repair options depend on what has actually failed. Sound sash + broken glass = new pane and fresh glazing. Sound sash + fogged unit = new insulated unit. Failed putty + sound glass = strip, re-point and reglaze. Frame damage is the dividing line: localized damage can often be repaired, but a sash or frame rotted through is where we stop recommending repair and quote replacement instead. Glass choices include standard clear, tempered safety glass, laminated glass for security and noise, and low-E insulated units where the frame accepts them.
How the Job Works, Step by Step
- 1
Assessment
Call and describe the problem. Where possible we assess the damage first — a cracked pane, fogged unit, broken hardware or a mirror that needs replacing — and tell you honestly whether repair or replacement makes more sense.
- 2
Written quote
You get a clear price for the agreed work before anything starts: glass type, thickness, finish and labor, all spelled out. No surprises when the job is done.
- 3
Measuring & ordering
We take exact measurements and order or cut the glass and materials to size. Tempered and safety glass is ordered to code for doors, showers and low windows.
- 4
Installation
Our glaziers remove the damaged material, fit the new glass or unit, seal the edges and check the operation of the window or door. Work areas are protected and left clean.
- 5
Final check
We inspect the finished work with you in good light. You get care instructions and our number for anything that comes up later.
Care & Maintenance
Fresh glazing putty needs time — do not paint or stress the sash until it has skinned over and cured as your glazier advises (usually days to a few weeks depending on weather). After that, reglazed windows need only gentle washing and a yearly look at the putty line and exterior paint, which is the putty's weather shield. If you see putty cracking or pulling away in future years, a touch-up then is cheap; left alone, water gets in and the repair becomes bigger.
What Affects the Price?
No two homes in Houston are the same, so honest pricing starts with a look at your actual project. These are the factors that move the number most:
- Pane size and glass type — clear, tempered, laminated or insulated unit
- Sash condition: sound wood or metal versus rot and corrosion repair
- Access — upper floors and tight stairwells add labor
- Whether the sash can be reglazed in place or must come to the shop
- Paint and finish work after the glazing cures

Window Reglazing & Glass Repair — Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is reglazing?+
Reglazing means removing the old, failed putty (or glazing points and compound) that holds the glass, resetting or replacing the pane, and sealing it with fresh compound. It restores the weather seal and the rattle-free fit of an old sash without replacing the window.
Is reglazing cheaper than replacing the window?+
Almost always far less — commonly a third or less of a replacement window's installed cost, and it preserves original sashes that are part of a historic home's character. We give you both numbers when both are realistic, and you decide.
My double-pane window is fogged. Do I need a new window?+
Fogging means the seal of the insulated unit has failed. The fix is usually a new glass unit in your existing frame — not a new window. We measure, order the unit and swap it, typically in one short visit.
Can you replace glass with safety glass where code requires it?+
In most cases yes. Tempered and laminated safety glass are required near doors, tubs and floors; we assess what's there and quote the compliant option.
How much do window reglazing & glass repair cost?+
The honest answer is that it depends on size, material and the condition of the existing opening. Beware of anyone who quotes a firm price without measuring. Bobbitt Glass and Mirror Company measures first and then gives you a written quote with the full price — free — so you can compare it properly.
How long does a typical window reglazing & glass repair project take?+
Measuring and ordering take the first part of the timeline; the on-site work for most homes is completed in a day. Larger or custom projects take longer, and we give you the schedule in writing before you commit, so you can plan around it.
Do you offer free estimates?+
Yes — call (713) 523-7369 and we will arrange a free consultation and written quote. There is no obligation and no pressure to decide on the spot.
Do you serve my part of Houston?+
Bobbitt Glass and Mirror Company serves the areas listed on our Service Areas page. If your neighborhood is close to a listed area but not named, call us — we will tell you straight away whether we can reach you.
What should I prepare before installation day?+
Clear the area around each opening, take down curtains or blinds if we are not replacing them, and move fragile items away from the work zone. Our team protects floors and furniture, and removes the old units and packaging when the job is done.
Can window reglazing & glass repair be customized for unusual sizes or shapes?+
In most cases, yes. Arches, angled tops, oversized openings and out-of-square frames are measured individually and made or ordered to fit. Bring us the awkward opening — it is usually the one that benefits most from a custom solution.
What information helps my quote be accurate?+
Rough measurements (width × height in inches), a photo of each opening, and a note about what you want to change. Send those when you call (713) 523-7369 and your written quote will be faster and closer to the final number.
What happens if something is not right after the job?+
Call us. Bobbitt Glass and Mirror Company stands behind its work: if something we supplied or installed is not right, we come back and make it right. That is how a local business keeps its name — one fixed problem at a time.
